Passenger Pigeon Martha 100 Years Later - Cincinnati Zoo

In science, we are learning how ecosystems can change gradually or dramatically. When the environment changes, some plants and animals survive and reproduce and others die or move to new locations. An animal’s patterns of behavior are related to the environment. This includes the kinds and numbers of other organisms present, the availability of food and resources, and the physical attributes of the environment.

Martha the Passenger Pigeon is a story of how a species can dramatically change.

Making Electromagnets in Science Lab

Today the students made simple electromagnets. Their electromagnets consisted of a length of conductive wire, copper, wrapped around a piece of metal, in our lab an iron nail. They created a current using a battery which allows the electron to flow through the wire. This created a magnetic field around the coiled wire, magnetizing the metal as if it were a permanent magnet. Electromagnets are useful because you can turn the magnet on and off by completing or interrupting the circuit, respectively.
